Fireworks, Family, and the Magic of the 4th of July

It just wouldn’t be the 4th of July without America’s beloved tradition of fireworks. Every year, the night sky fills with bursts of color and sound—a celebration that stirs something special in all of us.

For families with little ones, I always recommend a good pair of earmuffs to soften the booms, and of course, plenty of snacks to keep everyone happy. Pack your favorite treats, grab a lawn chair, and find that perfect spot to relax and take it all in.

I’ve always loved the crackling fireworks that look like a willow tree, wisps of gold light dancing through the sky. But as the years go by, I’ve come to realize that the real magic isn’t overhead—it’s the warm glow on our loved ones faces, ribbons of light reflecting in their eyes as they watch in wonder.

I’ll never forget my son’s first 4th of July. His chubby cheeks were adorably squished by his tiny ear muffs as he sat in the grass, nervous but completely awestruck. He only lasted about five minutes before he was over it—all he wanted then was snuggles. So I held my sweet, squishy baby in my arms for the rest of the show. I remember watching the fireworks reflect across his round little face, the colors dancing over his skin, and thinking: this is it. All the magic of the night came to life right then, wrapped in the warmth of holding my precious miracle baby.

The 4th of July reminds us how special it is to gather and to celebrate freedom. I hope this guide can help you create memories that shine even brighter than the fireworks themselves.

Yearly Photo

Capture a photo that can be repeated each year! Find a special place (porch, house stairs, favorite breakfast spot) and recreate the same photo each year. Add to an album and watch your family and little ones grow throughout the years!

Write a Family Declaration

This can be something you hang up somewhere in your home. What do we stand for? How do we walk in the image of God? What does freedom mean to us? Great for older kids. Something you can review each year.

Attend Parades and Events

There is always something to do on the 4th of July! Firehouse breakfast, small town carnivals, parades, church gatherings etc. Make a point to get out of the house before those fireworks start!
